A Chenes itinerary

A structured way to explore the Chenes region, from Santa Rosa Xtampak to its more remote satellite sites.

Introduction

The Chenes sites are less concentrated than Río Bec, with longer transitions between them.

This itinerary organizes the region around Santa Rosa Xtampak, the largest and most coherent site, and extends outward to Hochob, Dzibilnocac, and El Tabasqueño. The one-day version focuses on a limited set of sites while the two-day version allows for fuller coverage.

At a glance

Base
Hopelchen, Campeche

Duration
1-2 days

Route
Loop from Hopelchen through Santa Rosa Xtampak and the central Chenes sites

Total driving
About 6 hours

Roads
Mostly two-lane highways in decent shape, but watch for potholes, and a very rough access road to Santa Rosa Xtampak.

Key sites

Santa Rosa Xtampak (anchor)
Hochob (refined facade work)
Dzibilnocac (remote, atmospheric)
El Tabasqueño (minor, on-route stop)

Route logic

On a map, the Chenes sites seem loosely aligned, but the logic is not linear. Distances are moderate, yet transitions are slow.

The constraint is sequencing, not distance. Without structure, the day fragments quickly.

Starting with Santa Rosa Xtampak provides scale and orientation: a large, multi-level complex that anchors the region architecturally.

From there, Hochob offers a more refined and compact expression of Chenes decoration, while Dzibilnocac shifts the experience toward isolation and setting.

El Tabasqueño works as a short stop rather than a destination, fitting naturally between larger sites.

The itinerary

One-day itinerary

Morning

– Depart early to stay ahead of heat and travel time (7:30–8:00).

– Santa Rosa Xtampak (1h30 drive, ~2h on site)

→ the Chenes capital and main anchor; access is slow, so allow time

Midday

– lunch in Hopelchen (around 13:00)

Afternoon

– Hochob (1h travel, ~30 min on site)

→ the most refined Chenes facade, centered on a well-preserved serpent-mouth entrance

– El Tabasqueño (30 min travel, ~30 min on site)

→ a short, on-route stop before returning to Hopelchen

Two-day itinerary (recommended)

The two-day version separates Santa Rosa Xtampak from the other sites, allowing time for its scale rather than compressing it into a denser route.

Day 1 — Santa Rosa Xtampak (anchor day)

Morning

– Depart early (7:30–8:00)

– Santa Rosa Xtampak (1h30 drive, ~2h on site)

→ the largest and most complex site in the region; requires time to navigate fully

Midday

– Lunch in Hopelchen

Afternoon

– rest or a quick visit of Hopelchen

→ this day is intentionally kept light to allow a complete visit of Xtampak without rushing.

Alternate timing

Late morning arrival from Campeche or Merida, with a visit to Xtampak in the afternoon

Day 2 — Central Chenes cluster

Morning

– Depart early to beat the heat (7:30–8:00)

– Hochob (1h drive, ~30 min on site)

→ the most refined Chenes facade, compact and highly legible

– Dzibilnocac (~45 min drive, ~45 min on site)

→ more remote, with a stronger sense of scale and presence

Midday

– lunch in Dzibalchen

Afternoon

– El Tabasqueño (15min drive, ~30 min on site)

→ a short stop on the way back to Hopelchen

Alternative timing

– Continue through the three sites without stopping for lunch

– Return to Hopelchen for a late lunch (~15:00)

→ lunch options in Dzibalchen are limited, so delaying the stop often results in a better break in Hopelchen

Each of these sites has its own character. Below is a quick overview to help you decide how much time to spend at each.

The Chenes sites

Santa Rosa Xtampak

The largest and most structured site in the Chenes region, with multi-level buildings and a clear internal layout. The architectural anchor of the route, deep in the Campeche forests.

More details →

Hochob

A compact but highly refined site, centered on one of the best-preserved Chenes facades. A precise and legible expression of the style.

More details →

Dzibilnocac

Defined by its towers and fairly remote, the site is larger in scale than Hochob, with a stronger sense of mass and presence.

More details →

El Tabasqueño

A smaller, secondary site visited as a short stop between larger locations. Visually close to Hochob in a more remote setting.

Strategic notes

Prioritize sites
Trying to cover everything in one day reduces each visit to a short stop. Focus on 2–3 sites.

Anchor the route
Santa Rosa Xtampak should structure the itinerary.

Expect slower movement
Road conditions and access tracks reduce average speed.

Limited cell coverage
Outside of Hopelchen, cell coverage is practically unavailable. Plan navigation in advance.

Start early
Shade is limited and distances add up over the day.
